Overview
Family reunification is one of the most important pillars of Canada’s immigration system. A Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has paid taxes in Canada for three consecutive years can sponsor close family members to immigrate.
Eligible relatives include a legally married spouse, dependent children (under 22 and unmarried), and parents or grandparents.
To sponsor parents or grandparents, the sponsor must prove sufficient average income over the three years prior to the application, meeting the government’s published income threshold for that sponsorship stream.
Key requirements
- Sponsor is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, aged 18+
- Three consecutive years of tax history in Canada
- Spouse: a legally married (in-person) marriage
- Children: under 22 and unmarried
- Parents/grandparents: sponsor income meets the 3-year threshold
